As expected, Elden Ring: Nightreign will continue the Souls tradition of featuring a poison swamp. However, this time, things are a bit different.
According to game director Junya Ishizaki, Nightreign will introduce dynamic, large-scale terrain changes, with procedurally appearing volcanoes, swamps, and forests. Speaking to PC Gamer (via GamesRadar), Ishizaki explained the reasoning behind this new approach:
"We wanted the map itself to be a giant dungeon, so players have the chance to traverse and explore a different way every time they play. You have to choose the boss you want to face at the end of the third day.
Once you've made that choice, maybe you have an idea of how you want to strategize against that boss, and this might change how you approach the map. We wanted to offer players that agency, to decide, 'I need to go after a poison weapon this time to face this boss.'"
This design bears some resemblance to Fortnite’s evolving map mechanics, where familiar landscapes are altered with new environmental elements like volcanoes and swamps. In Nightreign, however, these changes will occur procedurally each match, further reinforcing the game’s roguelike-inspired structure.
As previously revealed, Nightreign will also feature a battle royale-style shrinking zone, with players surviving across a three-day in-game cycle. The reveal trailer hints at a variety of dynamically shifting landscapes, including a poisonous area and a lava-filled cave.
Swamps aren’t the only classic Souls element making a return. Ishizaki has confirmed that a "small number" of enemies from the Dark Souls series will appear in Nightreign. Fans have already spotted Dark Souls 3’s Nameless King in the trailer, and it’s likely more familiar foes will surface—perhaps even as part of these randomized world events.
